Volunteering with older adults — a guide for getting started

Yamim Tovim3 min read

There comes a moment when many of us feel we want to give — but are not sure how, where, or how much time it will "cost". If you have ever thought about volunteering with older people, this guide was written for you. At Yamim Tovim Ashdod we have accompanied hundreds of volunteers through their first steps, and here is everything worth knowing.

Why older people in particular?

Older people living alone are among those most in need — and the most invisible. Many of them spend whole days without human contact. Because of that, even a little of your time creates an enormous effect: a single weekly hour can be the difference between a week of loneliness and a week with something to look forward to. And it works both ways — our volunteers tell us again and again that they receive no less than they give: life wisdom, perspective, and real fulfilment.

What kinds of volunteering are there?

Not all volunteering is the same. With us you can choose what fits you:

  • Personal companion on home visits — a regular weekly visit to an older person living alone. Conversation, listening, and a little everyday help. This is what a home visit looks like.
  • Food parcel distribution — packing and delivering food parcels to families and older people in need, especially before the festivals.
  • Leading social activity — organising gatherings, classes and events that bring back connection and a smile.
  • Logistics support — helping transport medicine and supplies, managing stock and liaising with suppliers.

What is asked of me?

Far less than you think:

  • No previous experience and no professional training — we guide and support every new volunteer.
  • Time — even an hour a week makes a difference. You set the pace that fits your life.
  • Qualities you already have — patience, a warm heart, and a willingness to listen. That is the main thing.

How long does it take, and how do I start?

The first step is small: you leave your details, and we get in touch for a short conversation. Together we will work out what suits you — the kind of volunteering, the area and your availability — and connect you where you can contribute most. All the way through you will have someone to turn to: our team is there for questions and support.

The first step starts here

You do not have to be a hero to change a life — you only have to begin. Join us as a volunteer and find out how good it feels to give. Would you rather hear more first? Get in touch and we will gladly answer any question. And if you would like to support us another way, a donation strengthens everything we do.

Want to help an older person living alone?

Every donation and every volunteer translates directly into home visits, food parcels and work that eases loneliness.
